South Korea is compelled to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape of East Asia, which is characterized by great power rivalry and regional tensions. The 21st century has been marked by the sharp rise of North Korea’s military capabilities, the intensified rivalry between China and the United States, and growing instability in regional security. The “New Southern Policy” (NSP), launched in 2017, signifies South Korea’s strategic diversification of foreign policy toward South and Southeast Asia, with a focus on India and ASEAN.
