The rising threat from neighboring countries, the civil war in Syria and “Islamic State” in the Middle East are posing great risks to the region. If earlier terrorism and Islamic radicalism were not a significant threat to the region and mainly were linked to external factors and Afghan Mujahedeen, the emergence of the “Islamic State” and activity of the new radical groups put a new reality in the region. The existence of radical groups inside the region was a surprise to the local authorities (Karin 2017, 5; Swansttom 2010, 35-51; Balchi 2014). The article analyzes the new challenges connected to the activation of radical Islam and the emergence of “Islamic State”.
